How to Care for Dry, Cracked Heels
Dry, cracked heels are a super common problem, and while they can be annoying, they're definitely treatable. A little bit of consistent care can make a huge difference.
- Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. This is the most important step. Get a thick foot cream and apply it at least once a day. Look for ingredients like urea, salicylic acid, or shea butter, they are great at softening tough skin. For an intensive treatment, slather on a thick layer of cream before bed and put on some cotton socks. You'll wake up with much softer skin.
- Exfoliate gently. You need to get rid of the hard, dead skin. A pumice stone is a classic for a reason, use it in the shower a couple of times a week. You can also use a foot scrub, but avoid anything that feels too harsh. You want to smooth the skin, not irritate it.
- Avoid hot water. I know a long, hot shower can feel great, but hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils and make dryness worse. Try to stick to warm water instead.
- Stay hydrated from the inside out. Drinking enough water is good for your whole body, including your skin. Making sure you're hydrated can help your skin stay moisturized from within.
- Get professional help if you need it. If your heels are still cracked and painful even after a consistent at-home routine, it might be time to see a dermatologist. They can help rule out any underlying issues like a fungal infection and recommend stronger treatments if necessary.
Consistency is key. It might take a little time, but with regular care, you can get your heels back to being smooth and comfortable.
