What is the Safest Way to Remove Gel/Acrylic Nails?
Taking off gel or acrylic nails can be a pain, and it's so tempting to just peel them off. But seriously, don't do it! That's how you completely wreck your natural nails. The best and safest method is to let them dissolve.
1. Prep Your Nails
First, get your nails ready. Use a nail file to gently scuff up the top shiny layer. You're not trying to file the whole thing off, just break the seal so the acetone can get in there.
2. The Soak
This is the most important part. You'll need 100% pure acetone. You have a couple of options:
- You can pour a small amount into a glass bowl and just soak your fingertips for about 15 minutes.
- Or, my personal favorite, is the foil method. Just soak a cotton ball in acetone, put it on your nail, and wrap it all up with a piece of foil. This holds the acetone right where you need it.
3. Be Patient
After about 15-20 minutes, the gel or acrylic should look all gooey and soft. Use a wooden cuticle stick to gently scrape it off. If it's not coming off easily, don't force it! Just soak for a little longer.
What to Do Afterward
Once you've removed all the product, your nails are going to feel a little dry and maybe a bit weak. That's totally normal.
- Moisturize Immediately: Put a good amount of cuticle oil on them right away to rehydrate.
- Take a Break: It’s a good idea to give your nails a little vacation before your next manicure. Let them breathe and get strong again.
Honestly, it takes a little longer than peeling, but it's so worth it. Your nails will thank you later.
